Hopscotch is building the most game-changing platform on the planet for the next generation of small service-based business owners.

The founders approached Motto under the stealth name ‘Zuro’. The vision for our work together was to rename the company and take the brand from concept to market with a first-of-its-kind business platform built for startups and small business owners.

Our goal was to help Hopscotch take the fuss out of financial management and make running a small business feel like a dream.

Challenge
Despite being a rocky year, 2021 saw a surge in small business start-ups. Starting up seems attractive enough – but keeping your business going? Business smarts can only get you so far. You need to have the right tools in the box to deal with the complexity and keep things running smoothly. This can be tricky when you’re spinning so many plates as a company founder. Between the late-night scheming, the pitches for new business, and getting your head around the money part it can be tricky to master. There’s a platform to network, another to send invoices, another to receive payments, another to send payments, another to project manage. And just like that – your Monday went to hell in a handbasket.

On top of that, the platforms you’re using are dry, uninspiring, and don’t even integrate properly. And the real kicker? They actually charge you for the privilege of using them. Some are upfront about it but some are a little bit sneakier. So you’re paying money to manage your own business, and not a single tool does everything you need in one place.

Naming the Brand
Hopscotch: A popular playground game in which players toss a small object into numbered squares and then hop or jump through the spaces and retrieve the object. The name suggests overcoming obstacles and finding the quickest path through and around to achieve a goal – a centralized online platform that is easy to use and packed with powerful functionality. With Hopscotch at your side, you can seamlessly hop, skip, and jump from A to B. And the best part is, that Hopscotch is constantly innovating to solve new problems as your business grows. It’s the perfect partner for small business owners. A place where you can run all of the aspects of your business – in a simple, easy-to-use interface. A community of businesses thriving. Together. As one.

Big Idea Worth Rallying Around™
‘Skip the BS’ is the rally cry we created for Hopscotch – it’s the simplest encapsulation of what the brand is about. To bypass the pains of running a small business in favor of an easier, more productive, and creative life. The rally cry is relatable and full of attitude. It gets every small business owner’s head nodding and gives them permission to only accept well-designed, intuitive technology. It’s an empowering path past business frustrations and a refusal to accept the boring or basic. It’s a brand mantra, a life motto, a branded hashtag. #SkipTheBS

Verbal Identity
Hopscotch brand tone is effortlessly cool, intriguing, fun, and effective. We intentionally empathized with the mindset of a small business owner.

Sample copy:
“You’re an innovator, crafting something needed and necessary. You’re a problem solver with a fresh point of view. You want to do big, important things. And you choose the hard graft of going it alone rather than being on someone else’s payroll. We know the challenges involved in managing your business. The late nights. The headaches. The time-sucking, anxiety-inducing reality of managing the money side of things. And so we’re here to do something about it. Because something is very broken with the way things are now. The tech, the integrations, the visibility… it’s just not in harmony for small businesses.”

We wanted to create a verbal identity for the brand that speaks to this audience and could solve the problems within today’s financial platforms. 

Website UI/UX
A digital experience playground.
We began by launching Hopscotch with a landing page that led to high conversions. We wanted to season the URL while also square the tech. Simultaneously, the Hopscotch app was being designed and built so we could flip a switch and turn on the new brand digitally across the web. The result is a high-performing, high-converting site that drives the Hopscotch value prop and signs up new customers. 

Marketing
To activate the brand and create publicity, we hit the streets of NYC for a guerilla-style launch.
